Brief therapy is effective in addressing sleep challenges that are maintained by cognitive and behavioral factors.
However, some sleep problems can be caused by an underlying health problem. If sleep problems are caused by or are significantly affected by a serious medical condition (such as chronic pain, neurological disorders) or severe psychiatric conditions (such as major depression, bipolar disorder, or psychosis), brief therapy may be insufficient as the sole treatment method. In these cases, a combination of medical treatment and brief therapy may be necessary. So it's advisable to consult a sleep doctor to rule out a medical explanation.
